- JASMINE JUSTICE: New Kind of Kick

- Opening Reception: Friday, March 27 (7-10PM)
- ARTIST STATEMENT
- Looking for a new (but particular) kind of kick:
- I expect the creation of each painting to provide a unique experience. In my line of painting, work is very serious play, full of new inventions and experiments. My intuition and subconscious take the reins and then give way to long, focused spells of quiet contemplation.
- Not knowing what a piece will look like until it’s finished keeps the experience fresh and alive. Sometimes a few paintings might end up falling into a loose group, but it’s my intention that the experience of viewing them be as eclectic as the experience of making them. I feel suspicious of signature style, and try not to hold on to one.
- It is often said that the victor writes history. The language of abstract painting is widely seen as an exclusive language of academia and an elite class. It is also understood by many to have been authored by dead (or half-dead) white men. In the spirit of fun and kindness, I can use this language as a way of playing dress-up in Grandfather’s clothing; the particular points of mismatch and ill fitting bring form to the individuality of my voice and hopefully highlight its mischievous tone.
- On an angrier note – as my eyes open wider, I see it’s becoming more necessary to smash the language of abstract painting open. Like a piñata! The people of the world – past, present and future – will all soon have much more access to sharing its powers and delights.
